THEME 2026: GENDER-EQUAL SOCIETIES
For 2026, the WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainability Award will highlight one of the most powerful forces for sustainable development, peace, and resilience: Gender-Equal Societies.
In a world facing climate crises, armed conflicts, and democratic backsliding, it is more important than ever to celebrate the change-makers building equality, opportunity, and shared prosperity.
Gender equality is not just about representation or formal rights — it’s about creating real opportunities for women to participate on equal terms with men:
to own land
to access education
to gain financial independence
and to live in societies where systems support life choices beyond traditional gender roles
The award recognises those driving meaningful change: from advocates securing fair laws and access to resources, to leaders enabling women’s leadership in climate action, economic development, and community building.
Nominations are open until 11 january 2026 — from all around the world — for individuals and initiatives paving the way for a more equal future, where everyone can thrive and actively contribute to sustainable societal development.
Last year, we received over 800 nominations from 99 countries. Since its launch in 2000, WIN WIN Gothenburg Sustainbility Award has recognised and supported pioneering solutions to some of the world’s greatest challenges – from climate and biodiversity to social justice and democracy.
Expert Advisors 2026
Hanna Gunnarsson
Hanna Gunnarsson works at the intersection of gender equality, environmental justice, and human rights. Active in networks such as Women Engage for a Common Future and the Women’s Major Group, she focuses on countering anti-gender and anti-climate narratives while strengthening civil society’s voice in international UN processes.
Martin Hultman
Professor Martin Hultman at the University of Gothenburg studies why societies fail to act on climate change despite decades of awareness. His research connects climate obstruction, environmental law, and degrowth, offering insights into how social norms and forms of masculinity influence both climate denial and efforts to build a more equal and sustainable world.
