GENDER-EQUAL SOCIETIES

CELEBRATING CHANGEMAKERS DRIVING GENDER EQUALITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT WORLDWIDE

WHY GENDER EQUALITY MATTERS

As the world faces climate crises, armed conflicts, and democratic backsliding, it is crucial to focus on the forces that build long-term resilience, peace, and sustainable development. One of the most vital — yet often overlooked — is gender equality.

Equality is not only about representation or formal rights but about creating real opportunities for women to participate in society on equal terms with men — economically, socially, and politically.

It's about:

  • The right to own land

  • Access to education

  • Gain financial independence

  • Live in societies where social systems enable life choices beyond traditional gender roles

  • Structures that free up time, resources, and space to contribute and lead societal development

In many parts of the world, gender equality is a direct prerequisite for achieving other development goals.

  • When girls no longer have to walk long distances to fetch water - thanks to a nearby well - they gain the opportunity to attend school.

  • When women access microfinance or secure land ownership, household welfare improves, children's education levels rise, and entire communities become more resilient.

A GLOBAL BACKLASH ON GENDER EQUALITY

Despite progress, gender equality is under threat from a global backlash, where women’s bodies, voices, and rights become battlegrounds for authoritarian forces.

This is not an isolated development, but part of a larger, interconnected system of inequality, polarisation, and control.

THE WAY FORWARD: SUPPORTING SYSTEMIC CHANGE

The way forward requires that we recognise and support the individuals and movements creating systemic change.

The ones who:

  • Challenge power structures

  • Shift societal norms

  • Build societies where equality is not only a goal, but a strategy for peace, democracy, and planetary resilience.

THE WIN WIN GOTHENBURG SUSTAINABILITY AWARD 2026

Will highlight those who are driving real change.

From advocates securing fair laws and access to resources, to leaders enabling women’s leadership in climate action, economic development, and community building.

By placing inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunities at the center, these actors unlock the collective power needed to face the greatest challenges of our time.

We welcome nominations until 11 January 2026 that pave the way for a more equal future — one where everyone can thrive and actively contribute to sustainable societal development.

The WIN WIN Award - for outstanding achievements. 1 million SEK.

The WIN WIN Youth Award - for young changemakers aged 13-29. 100,000 SEK.
